What taper does it need, JIS or ISO?
-

errrrmmmm.. this is my first build.
what d'ya mean by that?? -

See this Sheldon Brown page;
http://www.sheldonbrown.com/bbtaper.html
You need to know the taper of your cranks to match the right length bottom bracket axle to get your chainline correct.
What cranks and hubs do you have?

Parker's have the excellent Shimano UN72 bb in 107 mm Italian threaded at a great price;

It's much better than that Miche piece of junk. ;p

square taper it is.
iso.... the bb I had, had TA cups and a campag spindle...
bit of a mixture :/ -

We guessed that. :-) There are two types of square taper though, JIS or ISO. If you know which yours is, and knowing the cranks would tell us, then we can tell you which bb to get.
I'm trying to be helpful here but you aren't helping much. :-)

sorry about me being unhelpful...the taper is ISO.
I'm just trying to remember the make o crank as they're at my flat.
I'll have to get back to you on that in an hour... how useless... -

No worries, my comment was said with a smile on my face.
107 mm ISO BBs are hard to find so that Miche is your best bet. You can use JIS but your chainline would be slightly out, although not enough to worry about.

Have a pair of stronglights, ISO taper.
there we go. -
• #12
Good man. I've been using Shimano BBs with my Stronglight cranks without any problems. Personally I'd go for the Shimano UN72 or UN73 as they last and last.

Do you have an italian thread aswell?
-
• #14
Yes. I've only got one bike (a Bianchi would you believe!) that isn't Italian threaded.
-
• #15
You know what they say; Italian thread, big head!
Vote now. -

Phil Wood makes a 108mm ISO bracket for the Miche primato crank. About 80 dollars without cups, but it's good to see "options".

Thanks for that!

Loctite is certainly worth trying. As well as reducing the chances of unscrewing itself, it will make removal easier as the Loctite keeps out moisture and hence reduce corrosion.
-

I've used Loctite with good results, after the LBS used their industrial scale BB tool and it still came undone in less than a couple of hundred km.

I've used blue Loctite on fixed cog lockrings and it's fine. There are other types of Loctite that really wouldn't be alright.

How easy is it to break the grip of the loctite when it comes to removal?
Easier than removing a corroded one.
Hi, I'm building a bike, and the only part I need to finish my bike is the bottom bracket...
The guy who sold me the frame gave me a BB that was too small to fit the lockring on...and has taken too long to get my replacement one
Does anyone know where I could find a 107mm italian threaded BB?
