Campag centaur cranks with track chainring

Posted on
  • Hi,

I converted my 2006 condor squadra to fixed a few years ago because the gear wire clip sheared off from the carbon stays and wanted to salvage the frame.

I used the 50 tooth ring from the centaur chainset but over the years the 1/8th chain has ground down the ring and it keeps slipping.

Rather than buying new cranks does anyone know whether it would be ok to stick a track chainring on the centaur cranks? I think it's 135bcd and 50 tooth so might be difficult to source but if I can would it all be compatible?

Sorry if this is a total noob question.

    Cheers,

    Loz

  • I think it may be time for a new drive-train...

  • Tell me what I want to hear dammit!

Maybe you're right though. This is just a commute/pub bike though so was hoping I could get away with further bodging.

  • This should be alright in 135bcd though right?

The old Campag chainset was compact so pretty sure it's 50t.

I have a feeling that if I put this on then my chain willl be too short though. I thought I was getting ridiculous chain stretch but I guess it's likely to be a combiniation of that and wear on the chainring.

  • Ignore this. Turns out it's 110bcd. I'm doomed.

  • Opted for Miche Primato crankset with 48t chainring. Velodrome Shop had them on sale for £85 with free postage.

As far as I can establish, the cranks should be compatible with my Campag Centaur BB. Hope I'm right.

  • For future reference to anyone else wanting to combine Miche cranks with Campag Centaur bracket, they are not compatible. Despite reading on other forums that other people have successfully matched the 2, it does not work. The cranks bottom out and rest up against the BB. The ISO taper is greater and it sits too deep in the crank hole.

I've now ordered a Miche BB which isn't ideal but is the cheapest option. Shame to swap it out as my Campag BB is only a few months old far superior from what I can tell.

  • Why didn't you just buy a new chainring? 110pcd, quite standard.

You can't slap a 1/8" ring on double cranks, without some work: they're for 3/32" wide rings.

Either mill the face of the spider arms or rebate the ring, so it sits squarely on the cranks.

Pointless with square taper cranks, but it's been done with Ultra Torque.

  • TA zephyr, great quality 3/32, 50T-56T > http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ta-110-pcd-zephyr-outer-road-chainring-50-56t/

you're running brakes and a freewheel?

  • I didn't buy a new chainring because I couldn't find a track (1/8th) chainring in 110 BCD. Feel free to link me one though Scilly....

I don't want to run another road chainring on it coz they just grind down over time and it's not ideal

  • Well campys 110 are not the same as regular 110 as they choose to offset one of the bolts to keep campy users buying campy i presume. Not sure this applies to centaur tho but why would it be different then chorus or record.

  • You're right. It's the same with Centaur. Wish things were universal but then I guess that's not how business works
