We should do that ride again this summer. It was ace.
I was gutted to miss out on that

As was I. Another meet up might be the motivation I need to give the thing a proper clean as well.

I've got a six speed, which at the moment only has two and a half working gears. I can't changed between the sprockets as one constantly slips so much as to be unrideable, which may be down to the 'nudger' or possibly to the wear on the sprockets. The low gear of the three-speed up will also only work if I keep the lever pushed down.
How much of a weight difference would I notice if I just went for a two-speed wheel rather than getting the gears seen to? It's the old Sram hub gear on mine, and it also has the rack which I would happily swap for the L mudguard setup.

I bought a 2 speed wheel off here to replace my 6 speed one and there's about a kilo difference. Not much difference when riding but if you're carrying it about then it adds up.
That was my reasoning anyway.

People who have rawed bromptons: did you get it bead/shot blasted or nitromors it? I'd rather not spend on it, I've heard that taking it to a shot blaster can be expensive because it's a lot more work than a normal frame.
I've just taken apart mine and found a lot of rust around the bottom bracket area so plan to raw it, but I don't know if it's worth all the effort if it's going to be sub <£100 for a raw and lacquer done in a shop.
-
• #1359
the raw ones tend to cost more because the brazing has to be so much better quality as it is on show
not sure about getting one stripped and lacquered
-
• #1360
I know people have done it themselves... I'm just emailing argos about it, but it might be prohibitively expensive.

I got two quotes for stripping and powder coating of £200 and £240. The time consuming parts are removing bushes/hinges etc and putting new ones in. You can't powder coat or refinish any other way.
I'm going to get mine blasted and hand spray/paint for a cheap finish - I don't expect it to last -

I'm thinking of using my cyclescheme money on a brompton. What do people think of this paint job:

Mmmm... minty fresh!

Argos (who ought to know) said that, to respray mine, they'd blast and paint it with the stem and front hinges in place (they suggested I remove and refit the swing arm hinge). They said they've done it that way before, and the paint still gets all up inside the hinge crevices effectively.

Don't.
Go for a colour that will hide the dirt. Bromptons get dirty very quickly.

The only paint that work well is Brompton's own.
Mind you, I saw an all silver one not long ago, and it look awesome.

And Brompton's paint isn't paint - it's powder coating, except on the raw frames, which are laquered.

Going for racing green in the end, hopefully will look nice with the B17 in brown. Considering pimping out the hinge clamps with those brompfication brass ones....

^^ Whereas I badly need a haircut. Score draw.
^ I can recommend the Brompfication brass-lever clamps. I've got the brass/titanium ones with clear clamps on my TiBrompton. They're very nice, and much better to use than the Brompton ones which have an annoying habit of spinning round, and sticking in place when it's wet.

The paint/powdercoat on Bromptons is delicate.

Has anyone with a 2-speed or 6-speed setup found a shifter upgrade which works?
I really don't like the standard one and would prefer a trigger-style shifter, would a standard MTB shifter work with the chain pusher?

Anyone know where the bullhorn bars from these pictures come from?
Strada wheels from the top of my head.
