  • Interesting, would the spokes be long enough to swing the dish over that much? And are the spacers easily removed to allow shifting the hub over?

They could be but again its not a long term solution and seems like more effort than is needed.

  • Beater toe-clips and straps so I can use any shoes (plus a test for a smaller image as the others^ are huge).

  • Quick update:
    Spacer arrived and it looks very well machined;

Only things left now are cranks off Howard, chainrings possibly off ebay (anyone got any idea what these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Shimano-Deore-LX-104bcd-26-36-48t-mountain-touring-bike-chainrings-/161209133309?pt=UK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&hash=item2588d028fd would go for?) and freewheel off a friend. Does 48:18 sound alright for a mtb on road?

  • Sounds a little on theavy side pushing in headwind - but may be perfect for you.

  • Yeah was thinking it might be a bit high, especially with wide tyres, oh well if i get that^ ebay i'll always have the 36 to drop down to if need be.

  • I'm thinking of doing the same with a claud butler oracle I got cheap. Mine will be going fixed though, so I'll be watching this thread with interest.

  • Anyone know of any cheap 104bcd chainrings, 42-48t? Looking for something under £20 whilst i work out what gear ratio works then i can buys something a little nicer knowing its here to stay. Is there even anything for that amount?

  • Quick update after having amassed most of the parts i needed:

Cranks and bottom bracket from howard, really kind bloke that went above and beyond to give me some cranks for this. Massive help.
44t chainring off ebay with a dita 18t freewheel and a sturmey archer 17t incase i want to change.
Also have a 1/8th chain somewhere that i'll fit once i have everything.
All thats needed now are some chainring bolts so i ordered some kcnc ones for maximum WW efforts, figured something decent should go on this bike.
Will start with the 44/18 (64 inches) to begin with and can always swap to the 17t or get a bigger/smaller chainring if need be.

  • Bike finished now:

    Chainline pic with the spacer:

    Looks absolutely dead on...

ODI grips and ghetto brake levers

  • Yo dawg... I heard you like freewheels...

  • Good job - glad it all came together in the end! Get some rigid forks :)

Yes thats next on the upgrade list; how much do you think i'd get selling the suspension fork thats currently on it as i dont have a lot of cash for this project?

  • Dunno - my Rebas sold for £80 in the end weeps

Not a lot I suspect, then.

  • Ah well the the fork i was looking at getting is only 60 new (on one). So even if i get half of that for this fork on eBay itd help. Will keep this thread updated as i make progess.

  • Looks great!

  • Question: Does anybody know what kind of headset this bike takes? I understand its not external but apart from that im lost. Would this headset fit?

  • Looks good, I'm converting my MTB, when I gain full permission to post threads I shall put my progress up.
