Another best wheel question (sorry):
Best Shimano-10sp compatable road wheelset for around £200? Can probably go up to £300 if the difference is really worth it.
They'll be used for training, sportives & potentially a bit of low level racing but not turbo. I thought maybe Mavic Aksium but I have a niggling feeling that there was an issue with them so people are off them, but can't remember... Not Eastons.

There's a whole thread dedicated to road wheel reccommedations, either read it or buy some Shimano WH-R501-C30s which are about £80-£90

Well that was like a flashback through the fashions of the forum, then realised I've already read it in parts over the years.
It seems getting some wheels made would be the better option/most popular. Does mean I'm probably going to end up with matching wheels on my fixed & road bikes though (with their applicable hubs obv).

Do foot passenger tickets on the Plymouth-Roscoff ferry ever sell out, or are they fairly bottomless?

It turns out that I accidentally hit my turbo trainer adjustment knob with the hoover or something and it set the resistance level to one higher than it usually is.
I don't seem to have lost much strength, tbh - even on my first day back on the commute I hadn't really lost any speed and I was deliberately taking things easy. I only have one gear so I can test that quite effectively. My heart just wasn't working efficiently. Obviously during these last two turbo sessions my heart still wasn't working efficiently but I expect it wasn't really helped by the extra resistance.
Cool. Keeping on the weight wouldve helped for sure.
You can still use a combination of HIIT, aggressive commuting and strength work as a shortcut to improved fitness, ready for long challenging road rides / races you may have to take part in. Obviously nothing prepares you for endurance activities like the said endurance activity, but going all out at large volumes of moderate/low intensity work like on turbo is not always the smartest use of recovery capacity. Doesnt "step up" in a short time frame like strength, HIIT - then higher volume/length stuff.

I guess I'll need a team of specialist men.
Obviously this thread needs to be ressurected.

^^ I've gained about 3kg, all of it fat - being ill affected my ability to move, but not eat, which I've been doing to a heroic level.
I've been using the turbo because it's easier to obtain consistent data there than it is out on the road, so I can look at graphs and figures with an increasing sense of rage and impotence.
Thank you, I will try shorter, more intense sessions. Stupid, shitty body.
Meh.
If you are in fact recovering from something you should just be riding your bike. Out in the sun. For as long or as short as you feel up to it.
Turbo training and associated worrying about numbers of this or that is likely to just cause anxiety and cause you to push harder until you make yourself sick again.

I do agree with this, but the reason I'm fretting about it is because I'm supposed to be riding on the continent in, ooh... four week's time? ish, with a group, and I'm not going to be very popular if I'm crawling along at 5mph and deciding after 20 miles that I quite fancy going home now plz. I'm going to be anxious about this anyway so I'd prefer to do something concrete to improve the situation a little quicker but without going insane over it.
Luckily I'm far too fat and lazy to ever push myself too hard, so I should be ok.

About to replenish my stash of ten speed chains. Shimano seem to be cheapest at the moment - 5701 from Wiggle and CRC circa £14.
Any other sources of cheapness - shimano or other - before I pull the trigger on five or so?

^ good shout sir

They also have 6701 for less than £2 more.

How much fitness do you think you can build in 4 weeks?
How much harm do you think you can do to your sickly organism in 4 weeks?
You could get some fitness but if you drill yourself and you fall apart before you even get there...
And by riding I assume you mean in a social context as opposed to racing or even training, in which case the bunch should regroup at the top of any climb and ride at the pace of the slowest rider. Or, just go out solo.

Realistically, a little bit more than what I have now.

Oh, loads and loads. But there's a balance between sitting on my arse, and completely destroying myself. I haven't really got the right kind of personality for the latter. I've definitely got the right personality for the former.

I'm always fat and slow so they'd be doing that anyway, the gullible fules. I'd like some degree of comfort while I'm at it, though.
(I am arguing with you but I am taking your advice to take it easy at the same time I swear)

It sounds like you can balance a bit of work vs. going mental in a last ditch attempt to gain fitness so do it and enjoy the trip. If you are struggling, just spike the other riders' drinks with some 'must go potty' juice.

Any suggestions for portable, very small speakers that will sound better than laptop/phone?
I already have one of these http://minirigs.co.uk/ which is very good but when I'm trying to cram a week's worth of stuff into a bag I don't always have space for it.

Spot on.
Like I said just the commuting & social pootling is plenty really. "training" should only be done when back at full strength. Some shortcuts can be taken to get there. Like being aggressive with the commuting, eating/sleeping well etc..
My previous recommendation for throwing in a bit of leg exercises might be redundant if there is only 4 weeks. Might just end up with leg fatigue!
Listen to hippy, get out and enjoy yourself on a bike. Consider this an active recovery rest period, you'll only go backwards if you force yourself now. No "training" !

Unless you're Bill Bailey, who rhymes it with "vegetarian".

Does anyone have spare the required bits to transform my 1" threadless Chris King into threaded?
I hear chopping but I don't hear digging.
