    Actually, with a chain whip, the freewheel goes on (remember the purpose of the freewheel) . It comes off with a freewheel removal tool, that will be specific to the teeth on the inner of the free wheel.

    One thing to be aware of is that the teeth that allow you to remove the freewheel (in the middle) may not fit over the lock ring thread so it may not secure properly.
