  • I ran a 105 rear derailleur with a 8 speed chain before (and 8 speed downtube shifter), it work perfectly well, but that was something like 3 years ago and I vaguely remember much, I don't remember any noise or rubbing.

    Recently I ran a Dura Ace 7800 derailleur with an 8 speed chain, and felt the chain rubbing very slightly against the derailleur cages at the biggest/smallest sprocket.

    Currently running a Campagnolo Veloce derailleur with an old jockey wheel from a 6 speed Campagnolo derailleur, I find that the Campagnolo derailleur have a better feedback than Shimano with friction shift (used with Retrofriction levers).
