    I pay about a tenner a year for a domain with email, anything sent to that domain, regardless of what's before the @, comes through to my email.

    So, even if something is compromised (like Adobe last year) your adobe username will be adobe@myemail.com so plugging that into hotmail or whatever with the same password won't get you anywhere.

    The other bonus is you can work out where spam emails are coming from or who has sold your email address to marketing companies and block those.
