Something I was working on shortly before a pretty serious accident, ironically driver at fault. Finished today.
Ode to the Driver
See that bus edging out; is he trying to kill me?
Not using his indicator like he’s wanting to spill my
Guts on the floor, but I just pedal more,
Dodging past parked cars trying not to get doored.
The cab driver screams at me, “get back in the gutter”,
Thinks *he *owns the road, drives like a nutter,
Shouting “I pay for that tarmac!” with increasing aggression
Don’t he know Road Tax was abolished in 1937?
You pay Vehicle Excise Duty on your pollution spewing car,
based upon how much CO2 is emitted, coating my lungs in tar.
So before you take proprietorship, take a notation:
Roads are paid for via local taxation.
So it turns out I pay for that upon on which you drive,
So why is it me thankful every day I've survived?
So every time you see a cyclist taking up “your” supposed lane,
Cycling out in the middle, remember: they have a name,
They have a father, a mother, to which they’re returning,
Their loved ones, at home, worried, concerning,
Wondering if daddy or mummy will get home safe this evening
or if when they waved goodbye this morning ‘twas the last time they’d see them.
So look out for and take care of road users more vulnerable
Remember that user, to someone, is loveable.
