Motobecane Modernization

Posted on
  • So here's my Motobecane frame, I believe it is a Mirage(feel free to correct me) and after lusting after neo retro roadbikes for the past few months, I thought I'd give it a go.

and here it is in its former guise as my first fixed bike.

I'm going to build it up as a mile munching road machine to replace my rather boring Giant SCR1 aka hunk of alu crap.

So my thoughts were as follows:
-New groupset, possible Shimano 105 or Sram Apex (along these lines)
-New wheels, Shimano otp most likely
    -New all black finishing kit

    I'll document any progress here.

  • isn't rear spacing going to be a bit of an issue with a new groupo?

  • Cold set/squeeze for sure. Is it 126mm?
Might as well go Rival rather than Apex if you're willing to go for 105.

Yep, spacing is around that so should not be too big of an issue!

True, may as well, I'll have to have a look if any whole groupsets come up on ebay nearer the time!

  • ah man! If only I had the cash already! I need to replace the shifters on the giant before I can sell it, THEN groupset.

Damn that would of been perfect!

  • 126mm to 130mm is no problem.

I've never bothered cold-setting: the stays will happily spring 2mm either side.

Getting the wheel in and out is slightly more effort, but bearing in mind the scope for fucking things up with cold-setting, the return has never been worthwhile (for me).

  • Your 8 year old Giant is crap but you're replacing it with a 30 year old Motobecane?

  • 6 years old. I know performance wise the motobecane isn't going to be as good but I'm after a mile muncher rather than a race bike you see (not to say the giant is a proper racing bike). And I much prefer the way steel rides and looks compared to alu.

  • I can see what you mean, but you'd better look for a different steel frame as this Motobecane will give you quite some problems.. (brakes for examples).

  • is it too hard just to make them wider? I was thinking of just building it up on this frame and getting a nicer one, probably from Hilary Stone later down the line.

Anything else I should look out for problems wise?
