1950's Maurice Woodrup

Posted on
  • Some time ago, I acquired this beauty through the wonderful lfgss forum:

    It’s a re-finished, late 1950’s Maurice Woodrup track frame.

I spent some time thinking on how I want to build it up. I really wanted to build a dedicated track bike, since that is what this frame is. But it kinda bothered me to build a bike, and then hardly ride it (because a track specialist I am not).

This is my second proper complete build. My first one dates from about two years ago when I did a fixed gear conversion of a lovely 80’s Union frame. I still love that bike every turn of the cranks, and it gets ridden almost daily when it’s not wet, so I’m not looking to replace it.

A German bike-building friend (whom I have in fact, never met, but do check out his blog at http://cyclitis.wordpress.com/ for many amazingness) provided useful advice, and the end solution was to build it as a classic-looking track bike, but have a second set of stem + bars (possibly flat bars or something) with front brake attached, so it could be switched out from track mode to road mode whenever I fancied it. The fork is, after all, drilled for a front brake.
Period-correctness is not considered obligatory, due to budget constraints and me basically not really caring about that.

A BLB chainset, Nitto Jaguar stem, Nitto NJS seatpost and a San Marco Regal were picked up quite quickly, all through the forum, and while on a trip to Schotland, I picked up some unbranded drop bars. Not exactly classic track bars or NJS, but I like them and I think they look good on the Woodrup.

And then I was stuck on what wheels to get. I had no succes finding anything on Ebay or the lfgss forum, and I was thinking of getting a wheelset built with H+Son TB14 rims.
    And then these popped up:

I instantly knew these would be a perfect match for the Woodrup, so I bought them.
However, as the seller clearly indicated, these are dedicated track wheels only. So the idea of creating a track and a road version of the Woodrup is out the window, and it will become something that will hang on my kitchen wall most of the time and perhaps occasionally be taken out to the local track. But, honestly, I like these wheels enough to be ok with that.

So that’s where I am at this moment. A quick pic of the current state:

I'm quite happy with it, except the BLB chainring is bothering me somewhat, I’ll probably switch that one out for something else soon.

Any advice / comments are welcome!

  • Fucking lovely frame.
I'd be tempted to get some proper track drops on there though.

  • I was moments away from buying this frame from Wayne a while back...kicking myself a bit but happy to see it pop up on here again! It's a beauty. Love that wheelset too. Track drops for sure though.

  • They are track handlebars, but perhaps not proper ones.

  • This frame is awesome.
I agree with the above comment Re track drops.
    Nice built too...

Has this been posted in porn yet?

  • Lordamurcy that's amazing. +1billion it needs track drops!

  • GORGEOUS frame

  • Oh wow, that looks absolutely amazing. Could you not find a beater set of wheels to take it out on the road?

  • I instantly knew these would be a perfect match for the Woodrup, so I bought them.

I seem to remember you needing a bit more time to decide than that :P
Other than that: Jolly good show and nice representation! +1 on the real track drops. And maybe some pedals, too.
