Tubs in Town

Posted on
  • Anyone rock tubulars on a daily basis on the roads?

Been thinking about changing from clinchers but the bike is ridden every day to and from Falmer campus up grotty Lewes Rd, and not sure if it's really feasible - never ridden on tubs so a step into the unknown...

  • Tbh, I dont think its either practical or cost effective but i still wouldnt go back to clinchers.
Im using Gator tubs at the moment and Tufo tyres, but i choose a tyre that allows the valve to be taken out so as to add Latex(im using Tufo Extreme) which works a treat for me. I put all the contents in the tyre and i get more or less trouble free riding until the tyre wears out.
I always carry a spare tyre just in case.

  • Dammit was / is, too. I expect this to get merged into the tub thread ;)

  • Am aware of that thread but the reason I put it here is because I specifically wanted to know if it was feasible in the context of Brighton and the road conditions here (in town and otherwise)

Falcon, if it's not practical or cost effective, what's your main motivator for doing it? Performance alone?

    Cheers

  • Sounds like an awful lot of hassle for a very minor benefit. Can't say I've ever been riding through town thinking "I wish I had tubs right now".

If I had a super fancy bike I probably would though.

  • I dunno about super fancy, but it's a shit ton better than my fixie

Do like to do longer rides on it and plan on taking it to Europe at some point. I suppose long term I'd like to have a set of both so I could swap over as and when

2 bikes would be ideal but can't really afford another

  • In a few words, Tubs are seriously outdated bicycle technology. As for using them around town, it will be an 'experience', an expensive one! Lewes road is possibly one of the most glass and flint strewn roads in town, and quite easily chews up decent puncture resistant tyres. 'die hard' traditionalist roadies will always battle the argument towards them, but their advantages are less and less now that clincher rims are little difference in weight, also the tpi available on top road clinchers with the added technology in rubber and puncture resistance is at an equal, other than the bonus of being able to fix your puncture on the go!

  • Seems fairly conclusive - thanks Lewis (and everyone else)

    Clinchers it is
