Would something like this work?
-

Any cheap Shimano MTB thumb shifter should work.
Why not get those cheap Altus rapidfire shifter? they'd work and easy to obtain.

I like the old Deore 7 speed shifters.Would they work ?
I had them on a Clockwork Orange i had.
Nice piece of kit...

I've got a pair of these for sale, plus I have another set I use on my mtb. good kit. I'll be in ldn tomorrow.

Which shifters can be used with an 8 speed Campagnolo rear mech? I wanted to use the Paul Comp thumb with a bar-end shifter but can't find a Campy 8 speed bar end shifter anywhere.
-
• #7
Since it's 8 speed, friction is the easiest to obtain, otherwise find an old C-Record indexed downtube shifter.

How do I change the Campag down tube shifters in to thumb shifters? Is there something I need to buy?
-
• #9
Velo Orange made those thumbie to work with downtube shifter;
Freshtripe sell them, as well a other VO reseller.
-
• #10
I wonder if they'll work though?
-
• #11
They do work, extremely straightforward.
-
• #12
I meant I wonder if they'll work with the Campag sshifters I have.
-
• #13
If they fit on the down tube bosses, they'll fit on the thimble.
-
• #14
That's what I figured but was hoping someone had 'blazed a trail'.

I have a Sram TT shifter in one of those Paul Thumbies. Takes quite a lot of force to shift with just your thumb. But otherwise its the most full proof shifting set up out there.

I managed to find a second hand pair of 8 speed campag thumbshifters on retrobike a while ago - not cheap, but they were what Luddlet #3 needed for his campag-equipped road bike with risers (!). They were not cheap (£28 or so) but they are quite good.

The guy said he reckons they will work fine which is good so will be buying.
Does anyone have any idea what grips these are?

So, this left sided Campag DT shifter (friction) is not working very well as a rear shifter when converted in to a thumbie so I've found a set of 8 speed Ultegra bar end shifters which are indexed and should drop on to the Velo Orange thumbie adapters
Sheldon says the index is 5.0mm on the Campag and 4.9mm on the Shimano 8 speed.
This'll work right?
-
• #19
yep, it will work perfectly
-
• #20
The rear mech is 8 speed Campag
-
• #21
If all else fail, just switch to friction, Campag derailleur work better in friction than shimano.

Friction is a very unenjoyable shifting experience for me.
I wanna put thumb shifters on the Cannodale Rack. The friction downtube shifters I'm using are a bit shit and I want indexed.
Does anyone make an indexed 7 speed thumb shifter? I don't want replace the back wheel or rear derailleur.
Are there thumb shifters that work independently from the brake levers? or are all the decent ones a brake / shifter unit?
All the thumb shifters I have seen online look cheap, unless you start looking at SRAM (or similar).
