• We all know this makes sense. But, there other things to consider. Filtering in traffic; driver or passenger may open the door to free a trapped seatbelt or garment, pedestrians stepping out from vehicles that obscure them from other road users, drivers that see a cyclist undertaking so move to the right as a polite gesture but forget their blind spot. Together we could make a decent list, I'm sure.

I don't think cyclists who filter or undertake like that should really moan about not being given a full car's width.

The cyclist in the video, is he mentally sound? Perhaps cycling on the roads isn't best suited to him. I would say he should take up knitting but he'd still probably have an incident.

ignoring angry shouty man - because we are talking about the general situation - 2 wheelers, whether pedal or motor powered, are legally entitled to filter - which is different to overtaking.

Not only as I and greenhell have said are they much less dangerous - and much more vulnerable than 4 wheelers, but also if you are safe you should be filtering at a speed and location that lets you slow down or look out for such hazards. If I'm in the city I'll be filtering at no more than 8-10mph because there are so many besuited peds running out. Similarly slow right down/swing out passing a bus because people run out in front of them.

Obviously the car door opening is a risk, but in fairness they are meant to check before opening, so it's their fault. For most cyclists it's obviously a risk they're happy to take since it's so rare a problem.
