Kill a kitten, get jailed as a 'deterrent'.
The message is obvious. Anyone thinking of microwaving/machinewashing/blending/etc. a young cat or other animal (who doesn't?!) will pause and think 'maybe I shouldn't do this, that woman got put in prison for it'. On the other hand, anyone operating potentially deadly vehicles around cyclists doesn't have to worry about a similar fate.
Makes perfect sense.
