  • Lynx, I think it's because the state of animal welfare in certain Eastern European countries is far worse than it is here. Personally, I think it makes more sense to get a rescue from this country, but that's just me. There are already a huge number of dogs in shelters in this country, I think they should be taken in before a dog from overseas.

I got my dog from Battersea and he's basically the love of my life. #csb

Yes, but in here they don't get killed if they don't find a lovely owner, I think. Plus, the shelters, in here, are gorgeous compared to other countries.

But I still don't get if it's the owner(efficient or gorgeous as he could be) or the dog that change his status.

Probably more like dog xenophobe than racist.

I understand where you're coming from about a dog being nippy to strangers by the way. I fucking cannot stand people who can't control their dogs. Yesterday some little yappy thing jumped up at me and covered my trousers in mud because it wasn't on a lead. To say I had a go at the owner would be an understatement. Wanker.

  • Just careful when you go to the owner that you don't get an extra ration.

Some do and some don't, depends. Legally I read they can be put to sleep or rehomed after 7 days.

  • Savages.

  • Ha, yeah. I am with you there. I never, ever take my dog off of his lead. I trust him with my life and can't ever imagine him biting someone/another dog, but it's still not worth the risk. If he bit someone, he'd be put down and fuck that. I'd never get over the guilt.

  • Oh and whilst I'm at it, everyone should get a Staffordshire Bull Terrier from a rescue. Best dog's ever, and there are thousands of them all over the country that need re-homing.

  • Jeez you have just lumped all dog owners in one group. Like someone lumping cyclists in one group. Do me a little favour and presume that there are good and bad dog owners, and we are not all alike.
It isn't black and white, many dog owners have we'll behaved dogs, and many non dog owners love dogs.
You and many others will hate badly trained badly kept and anti social dogs, but really they are a minority.

We just rescued one from a cage in a flat. Would probably have become a classic chav's dog if we hadn't but the family let us take her. She is great, and is really friendly. She loves being part of a big pack of dogs.
I do think you should find somewhere to let your dog have some time of the lead. They do need to be able to run and play and socialise. The sooner you do it the easier it is, and the better it is for the dog, in my opinion.

You're quite right - so many dogs and cats here need rehoming.

I wish someone would take my neighbour's neglected hound. :(

Love of your life? Well yes, not many people I know have a tattoo of their pet :)

  • That said, seeing the list above is heartbreaking and I want to save them all :(

  • Ha, guilty as charged!^^

^^^ I was lying ever so slightly. We do let him off, but I don't when other dogs or people are around. I cannot be bothered with people running away from him or shouting at him just because he's a Staff... He's a big baby.

  • Rescue home wanted for needy case. Has some behavioural difficulties - always putting his nose into everything, demands constant attention and can be nippy when spurned. Works as a surveyor by day.

  • Poor thing. Sounds like a hopeless case :-(

  • I should shut up...

Given that you found a dog extremely annoying recently only because it was being affectionate, yes, this would be appreciated.

    Adorable.

  • Adorable.

Everyone should have a pet like JB.

  • Everyone should pet JB.

I think you'll find he's only got eyes for one though.

  • As a dog owner (rescue dog) I'm actually not keen on most other peoples dog handling abilities, or pretty much lack of! Its a bit like that sticker for bikes thats 'Just we're both riding bikes doens't make us friends' kind of a deal.

The times my former nippy dog has bitten people has been ...
unknown builders mate letting himself into empty house (apart from dogs) and trying to retrieve tools from behind dogs bed.
GF who had just met the dog cornering him in the boot of the car (his bed and boot of car are his spaces) whilst he was eating/drinking.
My jeans when he jumped a double single strand barbed wire topped fence, and got one back leg caught between the lines leaving him dangling by a back leg. Dislocated the leg/hip and tore a few ligaments trying to break free, I had to grab the dog and twist 180 degree's to release, so naturally he was freaking out and just latched onto the nearest thing (cuff of my jeans).

He was cool around kids, and the other dog literally doesn't know what teeth are for (the perfect soft furry monster), however, no matter how 'trustworthy' a dog is, I would never leave one alone with a kid, they often get jealous of the attention a kid receives, and kids have a habit of finding places to poke dogs that they don't like resulting in the inevitable.

Anyway, back on topic, if anyone is thinking of getting a pet, start at a reputable rescue centre, most of them will let you 'trial' an animal, 1) to see if its compatible with you 2) if you find its not the right decision for you a few months down the line you can return the animal safe in the knowledge that someone more suitable might be able to offer it a more suited home.

    1) The older dog a few weeks after we first got him, he'd never seen water before, didn't know how to swim and loved just running around like a lunatic with his new found freedom. 2) Both dog's together about a year later in the woods stalking sticks.
