Disk space is not memory.
It is disk space.
Memory is memory.Hope that helps.
I am talking about disk space originally as a nearly full hard drive cause the computer to be a little slower than usual.

Have you tried connecting via ethernet and seeing if that is faster?

Yeah you defo shouldn't need 8gb for web browsing.
Could it be something wrong with the 4gb though? Checked they are defo both registering? Tried a clean system install?I have just checked, both are registered, but I opened up the mac and they are mismatched ram, so maybe this creates the instability, I don't know... I know it's always better to get 2 equal ram for this exact reason, but could I get away with getting one 4GB ram? Only reason is because I am still hoping 4 will do but in case it won't then I can just but another 4GB rather than another set of 2 4s... Am I making sense?
And it is a clean install, the guy out a new hard drive in when I got it...

Was thinking about it last night and I don't seem to have an Ethernet cable anymore. We must have some in the office I could 'borrow'... If wired worked then would that indication it's sth to do with the airport? I have tried to use the computer offline for other things and it seems fine... Hummm.....

And yet you called it "Memory", which led to all sorts of confusion,
How much memory (HD) do you have left?
so no, it didn't help. It hindered.

Is it only slow on the internet? Other apps launch and run quick? Wild stab in the dark but if so maybe there is some sort of script/plugin which needs updating/deleting? Is that even a problem that could occur? Not sure...

I understood what he meant, but then maybe my response muddled the water a bit...

Other stuff runs fine, not the fastest but then it's only a base model Mac mini, so nothing unexpected, which is why I said to Ed last night that the machine still start up within seconds, like I won't have enough time to make a cup of tea... Whereas for any Internet download or system updates, I could have gone and made myself and the entire neighbourhood roast dinner plus apple crumbles and it'd still be downloading...
Home time come on... I have important business to attend to...

it would appear that it's only wifi that is unexceptably slow... the Mac is now wired via an ethernet cable and Bob appears to be my uncle at the moment... so... what does that suggest?? AirPort problem??
I should state that my wifi is with all other devices here...

Dodgy airport card?
-
• #5787
I take it back, I updated the system in 5 mintues (it would have taken 6 hours and counting last night...), there was an airport update, now I have unplugged the ethernet cable, back to wifi and iplayer seems to be playing OK, which it wasn't last night... so... maybe it was those updates that were needed? Or maybe I just have to sit next to the router in the living room... have yet to take the screen and mac back to the bedroom... keeping my fingers crossed...

Housemate wants new apple laptop as his just went.
He had an 2008 15" mbp
Just for home use, nothing technical. I've said Air but only because I think it's portability is a plus.
Any thoughts/insight would be welcom

Happy with my 13" MBPr

^ This. I originally ordered a 13inch air, then I cancelled it and went for a MBP retina. Price difference is minimum, In fact, I think the MBP would have worked out cheaper if I hadn't upgraded the ram and processor. Weight difference is non existence... unless he is thinking about the 11inch MBA, but the screen is too painfully small for certain things... You might as well go for an iPad...

Ok, finally selling my Mini (it's being picked up Sunday) and buying a retina... I have a Time Machine back up of everything (both internal discs) and have carbon cloned the larger internal which contains all my files. I should be safe to wipe both discs right? Then migrate my users etc from my Time Machine? Whats the best way to erase both discs? Disc utility then clean instal? I don't think this Machine has a recover partition so would be good to get one of those made at the same time...

So finally got round ordering the SDD for my mac mini and have "studied" how to replace it... ifix suggests removing the logic board which would require a removal tool, but I have watched this video that makes the whole thing look a lot simpler... thing is, I have screw drivers of all sorts but don't have the logic baord removal tool nor a spudger. Are these 2 tools really necessary?
-
• #5793
Definitely get a plastic spudger, it makes prying tiny ribbon cables off boards much less terrifying.

I was thinking of cutting a stripe off an old credit card, would that do? I just don't want to wait for delivery... Would I be able to get 1 from a computer or hardware shop?
-
• #5795
Credit card would probably work, just don't be tempted to use a metal screwdriver.

Are you going with a two drive setup or just replacing the old one with an SSD? If you're just replacing the old drive then you'll be fine without the removal tool, just takes a bit of angling to get the new drive in the gap and located properly. If you're planning to have two drives in there then you'll definitely need the logic board tool tool, but it usually comes supplied with the cable for the second drive anyway.
If you use a card instead of a spudger, be very careful when removing the ir sensor cable, the socket is pretty fragile (I found this one out the hard way!)
