both went for around 50...Whats the lowest i could pay for a similar looking wheel
I think you've answered your own question there. How much you eventually pay will depend on how much patience you have. Gipiemme Tecno 416 is 'similar looking', and cheaper than Campag

FUCCCKCKCK I just cut the steerer tube of my new forks too short. What can I do, is it possible to have the steerer tube extended?
as they're 1" forks could i use a threaded to threadless converter?

lower stack headset?

Which fork, and how much too short? These are important questions, although the answer is still nearly always 'sell the fork to somebody with a shorter head tube, and buy a new one'

• #90007
no, i cut it properly too short, i mistook the mark from the top of the headset for the mark i made at the top of the stem where i should have cut it. The fork's threadless 1". if I used one of these
to extend the steerer tube then would that work?
-
• #90008
slam dat stem
-
• #90009
I would, but the fork now does not protrude above the headset

Measure twice, cut once

If you have enough steerer to get the headset top nut on, they its fine - threadless adapter will work. Or quill stem for that matter!
If you have no threadspace to affix headset your fucked.
-edit-
I just figured out what you were suggesting. Using a threadless aheadset in combination with quill adapter. With the right headset this might just work.

^^ thanks, helpful.
The converter idea might work...
-
• #90013
You have to go buy a 1" aheadset to find out, hard to get hold of.

I'm guessing he's already crossed that bridge:
The fork's threadless 1".

By the way, using a quill-AHead adapter to extend the steerer is a terrible idea, because the headset preload will become contingent on the accurate positioning of a quill under all of the service loads. The whole reason why we dumped quill stems in the first place is that they waggle about under load, because the interference fit inside the steerer is several inches away from the load, separated by a length of rod which is necessarily a clearance fit inside the steerer.
-
• #90017
but if I can compress the headset enough and tighten it all up there's no reason why it wouldn't work right? it's obviously not as good as the option of not cutting the steerer too short, but still workable
-
• #90018
No, because when you pull on the handlebar, the loose end of the quill adapter waves about, varying the preload on your headset.
-
• #90019
what do you mean 'loose end'?
-
• #90020
The end you clamp your AHead stem to; it has no solid attachment to anything else until you get to the wedge/cone inside the steerer, several inches away. If it's a wedge, you can also be pretty certain that the axis of the quill will be skewed from the steerer axis, see Chris King on facing AHead stem for why this a bad thing.

yes, i see what you mean. however, initial tests (a spin to the park and back) suggests it works fine. perhaps repeated use will work the stem loose and damage the headset but seeing as I only just got these forks, they look great, i paid far too much money for them and their resale value is now close to fuck all I'm going to run with it for a while, at least until I have enough money to get a new steerer fitted.
in other news, initial tests showed that I need longer drop calipers as my tyres won't last long if i continue braking on them. so if anyone wants some SRAM force calipers in good condition (or has some long drop calipers to swap for them) then PM me - £60.

What are the forks? Might be interested, I have bike with a tiny headtube!
-
• #90023
They're custom made columbus max forks, clearance for 28" tyres and mudguards, with mudguard mounts in the fork blade...but I really don't want to sell them. if the 'fix' i've found doesn't work then I'll put them up for sale, but hopefully it's 'fine'
has anyone ever had a steerer tube replaced, and knows how much it costs?

• #90024
I think tp88 had his extended? Worth asking him

i suppose I have haven't I :L
meant to ask if it was rare to get them for around that price?
cheers for the gipiemme advice, I'll check them out!
How much do people usually pay for those campag shamal/vento etc. polished wheels with that purple logo? I missed out on both a front and rear at different occasions on ebay because i wasnt paying attention, both went for around 50 but when i search for them the prices are astronomical
Theyre my dream wheels but so far out of my price range i want to weep :'(
Whats the lowest i could pay for a similar looking wheel around an 8 speed?
Cheers
