If you have enough steerer to get the headset top nut on, they its fine - threadless adapter will work. Or quill stem for that matter!
If you have no threadspace to affix headset your fucked.

I just figured out what you were suggesting. Using a threadless aheadset in combination with quill adapter. With the right headset this might just work.
