The other team, Brazil, made a false start and the gun was fired, twice, to indicate this. The Chilean team failed to hear it and the officials, rather unwisely, failed to move the starting gate, presumably to save them a job for the restart. The Chilean rider, Irene Aravena, fractured her knee cap but is expected to make a full recovery.
