I have a micro 4/3 Olympus. It's my first camera. The crop factor is x2 so I would need a 20mm. My understanding is that the angle will be the same as a 40mm on a full size sensor, but will there be a difference with background compression?

You'd get the "background compression" of your 20mm lens.
