you can at least try and style that mistake out a bit like you were just expressing regret at something.
I saw a woman walking towards my road on my way to the station this morning that looked like my neighbour from a distance, she looked like she was about to wave so I put my hand up to acknowledge her except she wasn't waving she was was doing that weird thing women do where they carry their handbag hanging off the crook of her elbow and was lifting her arm up to stop it falling down... and it definitely wasn't my neighbour.
I had to cross the road and take a sidestreet that led away from where I wanted to go to escape the embarassment of having to walk past her.
