Grand Budapest Hotel was pretty bloody good. Obviously, it's no Tenenbaums but what are you gonna do?
On the plus side, I thought it was really funny. Easily Anderson's funniest film. It's also amazingly designed, with visuals that are somehow both intricately constructed and breathtakingly epic. And Fiennes and Revolori are a great double-act, cannonballing their way through a snappy plot. So much fun.
But I had a couple of niggles. It's gimmicky in the extreme - with the ratio changes and the spotlighting and the endless, endless tracking. It gets a bit much for me. I also thought the wealth of acting talent was a little underused - Bill Murray got less screentime than some of the cakes and Ed Norton had about ten lines. Also, the price you pay for such a uptempo 'romp' is that there's not much in the way of emotional engagement. It ain't gotta be suicide attempts with Elliott Smith but I just want the characters to be a bit more than a funny moustache.
Shit, I'm really beating it up here. I actually really liked it... It was just a bit more lightweight than I was expecting.
